No Longer Just Ferry Cross The Mersey !

I grew up in Chester, just over the road from Liverpool, and remember visiting for shopping and days out. It never seemed a very exciting city. That’s is of course apart from being home to the Beatles ! The last few years have seen massive changes in the city with designer shops, excellent restaurants and a vibrant nightlife, making Liverpool a city well worth a visit .

Probably the most exciting news for Liverpool in the last week or so is the impact the development of the Cruise Terminal is having on the city. This year alone £ 7 million pounds worth of revenue has been generated for the city. Last year saw 54 cruise ships visit the city, this year 63 have already called in with Disney Magic made her maiden stop there.  The next stage in the port`s development with be built on land reclaimed from the River Mersey, a two storey building cost well over £ 1 million. This will see the port become a permanent building instead of the current 350 feet floating structure.

Liverpool is the spiritual home of Cunard with the Cunard Building being one of the Three Graces of the city, the other two being the Liver Building and the Port of Liverpool Building, which line the waterfront.  It is also part of Liverpool’s UNESCO World Heritage Maritime Mercantile City. Of course being situated in the North of England the port opens up many more opportunities for passengers who want to sail out if a British Port but don`t want to travel to either Dover or Southampton.

2017 will see ships such as Fred Olsen`s Boudicca who will sail out on 9th June for a 26 night America`s cup cruise, crossing over via Madeira and the Azores on her way to Bermuda for the world famous race. The British Team, headed by Sir Ben Ainslie, are well on course for a historic battle with he US team. What better place to start a voyage that could see a little bit of history created than Liverpool !
