You Won’t Believe What Lies Hidden In This Forest In Japan

There are so many reasons to visit Japan: the incredible history, the fascinating culture, the stunning scenery and of course the adorable snow monkeys. (You didn’t think we’d write an article about Japan and not mention snow monkeys did you?)

But there’s now a new reason to jet off to the land of the rising sun… Just take a look below!

These incredible displays are made by fireflies that appear every summer. They mesmerise guests and transform the surrounding area into something right out of a fairy tale.

If you head to Japan in June and go towards the wooded areas, you may be lucky enough to see them yourself. Japan even has festivals that are dedicated to fireflies such as the Fussa Firefly Festival which takes place on the outskirts of Tokyo.

If you want to have a look at fireflies somewhere more remote you could head to Yuyake Koyake Fureai no Sato camping grounds in the suburbs of Tokyo. When the fireflies are in town the entrance will be free!

Some people avoid travelling to Japan during May-June as this is when it’s more humid, but in doing so they miss these incredible displays of wildlife! We think it’s certainly worth a visit for a chance to see something so magical, don’t you?

The best time to see these little critters is between 7-9pm. But you better be quick because each fly only lives for around ten days! You should also approach them quietly and avoid using the flash on your camera, so you don’t frighten them. (Not that you’ll need a flash when they glow so brightly anyway!)

It’s hard to believe that these tiny little guys can light up the sky isn’t it? There are actually two types of firefly in Japan and both light up during the mating season.
