Viking Intends to Dominate US Rivers

European river cruise giant Viking made an exciting announcement on Tuesday (February 24th), in that New Orleans will be its first North American home port for Mississippi River cruises.

In recent years, river cruising has expanded in popularity, providing passengers with a more traditional cruising experience in comparison to the mass-market ships that carry thousands of passengers and feature an array of attractions, such as theatres and water parks.

What’s more, river cruise boats are also able to pass through narrow waterways to port cities that giant ships could never reach.

The latest move from Viking River Cruises is hoped to attract more visitors to New Orleans and contribute towards creating more job opportunities.

Viking is renowned for its tours through Europe and Asia. The company has plans to build a further six boats over three years for the new American cruises, with each one boasting a 300-passenger capacity.

Carolyn Spencer Brown, editor-in-chief of CruiseCritic.com, said: “As we’ve seen in Europe, especially, when Viking enters a market, it truly helps to broaden awareness.

“The Mississippi River is one of the most magical and charming rivers to explore, so we’re looking forward to seeing more and more travellers experiencing one of America’s most intriguing cruise regions.”

Viking will announce its Mississippi itineraries and ship design later this year. It is said that the Mississippi vessel will be similar to the contemporary ships Viking uses on its European cruises.
