Thomson Purchase The Abandoned QE2 From Cunard

Thomson Purchase The Abandoned QE2 From Cunard

It looks like many of you know us (and your calendar) too well and spotted this was an April Fool. Thomson Cruises are not purchasing the QE2 (but wouldn’t it be great if they were?)

However Thomson Cruises will soon have a new addition to its fleet! The cruise line has announced that it will purchase the Splendour of the Seas from Royal Caribbean International. The ship will be renamed Thomson Discovery and will set sail in Summer 2016.

The ship first launched in 1996 and will become the largest of the Thomson fleet with its capacity to hold 1,830 passengers! Don’t worry, you won’t have to wave a teary goodbye to her fun features like the flow rider or rock climbing wall and almost half of the ship’s 915 cabins will have balconies!

There will also be no shortage of dining options for guests and Thomson will be keeping the ship’s speciality dining options. The dining on Discovery will be the best in Thomson’s fleet. The restaurants include two a la carte menus, featuring pan-global cuisine for a cover charge. The Main Restaurant is set to make an impression on passengers, spanning across two floors!

In line with other Thomson ships, the Discovery will have two swimming pools and will also feature an adult only solarium, a great place to relax without the kids. There will be a brilliant kids club on board for 3-11 year olds, and it’s free too! As a Thomson Cruises first, they are debuting an open-air cinema, meaning you can watch a movie on the top deck under the stars.

Another great thing about Thomson Cruises is that they have their own airline! This means that you aren’t restricted to one or two UK airports when you need to catch a flight to your port. These regional airports give you the chance to fly to your destination from your own hometown. You can take a look at some of our Thomson deals here.

The Thomson Discovery will be based in Palma, Majorca and flies from 19 regional airports. You can look at the itineraries, which include “highlights of the Mediterranean,” “cosmopolitan classics” and the “magic of Spain” here!
