MSC Combats World Hunger

MSC Cruises has announced its latest partnership with Expo Milano 2015 – the annual world fair that will be held in Milan, Italy this year.

Expo Milano’s theme is ‘Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life’, which will embrace technology, innovation, culture and creativity and depict how these relate to food and diet. Its primary focus will be on the importance of ensuring the world’s inhabitants are equipped with a healthy, secure and sufficient food supply.

Gianni Onorato, chief executive of MSC Cruises, said: “The theme of Expo Milano 2015 is a daily consideration in the way we behave and operate as a company.

“Food is central to every cruise, and we offer our guests a large variety of quality, culinary experiences that reflect food’s social and cultural importance. What is more, we work hard to do this in a responsible and sustainable way.”

Under the partnership, the line will become the official cruise carrier of Expo Milano 2015 and will display its logo on the hull of MSC Fantasia, which is scheduled to sail across the Mediterranean throughout this year.

The new move follows the cruise line’s ongoing partnership with UNICEF since 2009 on the Get On Board for Children project. This addresses child hunger and malnutrition in developing countries and has so far amounted to more than $3 million (£2 million) in MSC passenger donations to UNICEF.

Giuseppe Sala, chief executive of Expo 2015, said: “MSC Cruises creates dream holidays that centre on food, wine and the heritage of beautiful destinations. Similarly, Expo Milano 2015 seeks to offer an unforgettable experience through six months of rich and varied content, and scientific and technological offerings.

“This is why the pairing of Expo Milano 2015 and MSC Cruises is a natural one.”

MSC Cruises will have its own multimedia exhibition space at Expo Milano that will focus on its ‘Ships of the Future’, which will be ready for sailing in 2017.

Expo Milano will take place from May 1st until October 31st 2015. Guests travelling with MSC Cruises will be able to buy Expo tickets onboard and attend the event by partaking in exclusive shore excursions when calling at Genoa and La Spezia.
