Indian Government Forced To Back Down Following Protests

Back in February we reported that India didn’t seem to be interested in pursuing UK tourism anymore (you can read the full story here) following some changes they made in how British travelers had to apply for Indian travel visas.

Following widespread outrage and protests the hoops that had been put in place for people to jump through have now been removed.

Travellers wishing to visit India can now apply for a visa by either a postal application or a personal appointment.

Changes were made to the visa application process back in February but since then the “mandatory biometric testing” for visa applicants has been deferred, with sources saying perhaps forever.

These changes came about after the Indian High Commission outsourced the visa issuing process.

Anyone wishing to visit India should be applying for their visa as soon as possible, as processing time for postal applications will take a minimum of two to three weeks.

VFS, the company now handling issuing visas, recommends making sure you have the correct visa before travelling; “All applicants are advised to book their travel plan upon obtaining the appropriate visa. VFS will not be responsible for any loss for any bookings made in anticipation of obtaining a visa.”

A spokeswoman for ABTA has said; “We welcome the news that they have now decided to include an option for British holidaymakers to apply for visas to India by post rather than having to do so in person. It is still very important that holidaymakers familiarise themselves with any visa requirements before booking their travel arrangements and ensure that they allow sufficient time for a successful application.”

We’re sure anyone wishing to head to India will be relieved to hear the visa issuing process is at least stable once again. Will you be looking to visit India this Summer or next?
