Holland America’s Latest Ship Launch Delayed to March 2016

Those who have eagerly been awaiting the launch of Holland America’s newest vessel Koningsdam will have to wait a little longer, as the cruise line announced that its launch date has been delayed.

Koningsdam is currently under construction at the Fincantieri shipyard in Marghera, Italy. It was originally scheduled to be complete on February 16th 2016, but the new launch date has been pushed back to March 31st next year.

Speaking about the delay, Holland America released a statement that said it would “create the opportunity to fully leverage the new features, innovations and state-of-the-art technology”.

The amended launch date means that Koningsdam’s first sailing – initially scheduled for February 20th 2016 – has also been pushed back, despite passengers already booking onto the cruise.

The seven-day voyage from Civitavecchia, Italy, will now depart on April 8th 2016.

On a Cruise Critic forum, it was announced that an email from Holland America revealed the line will offer passengers booked on the original inaugural cruise onboard credit, should they decide to travel on the delayed date.

For those who are unable to make the rescheduled departure date, Holland America will issue a full refund.

On May 21st next year, the 2,650-passenger vessel will undergo an official naming ceremony in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Koningsdam will be used for a number of company events during the time between its March 31st delivery date and its first cruise on April 8th.

What are your thoughts on the delay? Did you already book a sailing onboard Koningsdam?
