A fire broke out in the engine room of Fred Olsen‘s Boudicca vessel in the early hours of Sunday (January 25th) morning whilst the ship was sailing off the coast of Casablanca in Morocco.
At 4:00am GMT the blaze erupted, meaning the 1,000 passengers on-board were required to wear life jackets as the vessel drifted off the coast for around five hours.
Luckily, the fire didn’t spread further than the engine room and no one was injured.
The ship had departed from Southampton’s port on January 20th for an 18-night ‘Cape Verde & the Canaries‘ cruise.
A statement released by the line said: “We are reviewing the itinerary and assessing the extent of the damage to the two main engines and electrical cables, and will make any repairs necessary at the next port of call. A revised itinerary will be advised in due course.
“The safety and wellbeing of all guests and crew on board Boudicca is Fred Olsen Cruise Line’s utmost priority, and we continue to liaise with the relevant maritime authorities.”
Following the blaze, Boudicca became stable again and slowly headed towards Arrecife in Lanzarote.
