Cunard transatlantic countdown begins July 4th

The countdown to Cunard’s first ever transatlantic journey starts tomorrow (July 4th 2014). Its maiden voyage begins in Liverpool and ends in New York, according to the Liverpool Echo.

Independence Day – a US holiday – will mark exactly one year before the world’s largest ocean liner, the RMS Queen Mary 2 (QM2),  leaves the UK for the shores of North America.

Tomorrow will also represent the 174 year anniversary of Cunard’s first ship’s maiden passenger and mail service. RMS Britannia left Coburg Dock, Liverpool, on July 4th 1840.

According to the Liverpool Echo, Angus Struthers, the new Cunard Line marketing director, said: “Exactly one year from now, we’re looking forward to creating a piece of living history as Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, the grandest ocean liner ever built, sails from Liverpool Pier Head to Halifax and Boston, just as Cunard’s first ever ship, the little paddle-steamer  Britannia, did 175 years ago.“

The cruise line had promised that Liverpool – it’s “spiritual home” – will have a role to play in its 175th anniversary celebrations in 2015. On her return, the QM2 will be showcased as part of the festivities.

Will you be visiting Liverpool next year to take part in the celebrations?
