The Chinese New Year Celebrations You Absolutely Cannot Miss!

The Chinese New Year Celebrations You Absolutely Cannot Miss!

With our own New Year celebrations now in the recent past, some people may of even started planning next years. But have you ever fancied celebrating it twice? Head to China where their new year is set to be February 1st 2022, and lasts around two weeks…

Tradition

Chinese New Year is the most important holiday for China and differs a whole lot to ours as the first day of our calendars don’t match!

China’s is based on a traditional Chinese lunisolar calendar whose date indicates both the moon phase and the time of the solar year, whereas ours is based on a solar calendar.

Did You Know: The Lunisolar calendar is two months shorter than the solar so, to catch up, an extra month is inserted every few years; this explains why Chinese New Year is a different date every year!

Celebrations usually start from that year’s new year’s eve and will last for around 2 weeks! It’s also normal to completely clean the house and display traditional New Year decorations (a celebration taken as seriously as we take Christmas!).

This festivity is the time for family reunion, which is the most important part of the Chinese New Year; people will normally visit relatives and friends, do some shopping, watch traditional Chinese shows, launch fireworks, and plan for the coming year. Pretty relaxing most of the time!

The holiday will sometimes be highlighted with a religious ceremony given in honour of heaven, earth, the family ancestors and other gods. And after the family reunion, some modern Chinese families may take the chance to visit tourist destinations to continue the fun.

Note: In modern China, working professionals will normally have seven days of holiday including the weekend to celebrate. If only we treated the new year as seriously…
