Lovely Lisbon!

On my recent trip on board Oceania Insignia we visited Lisbon as we were docked there overnight. I have been to Lisbon before but was 12 years ago on a cruise but didn’t see as much as I did this time.

We had breakfast at The Terrace Cafe of course and then met most of our group by the pool as we decided to go together on the ‘Hop on Hop off bus’ which is located just across the road from the port.  It was so easy to find and quite reasonably priced at 20 Euros per person for a full day ticket.  As there was 10 of us we got a discount of 2 Euros each so paid 18 each which was great. So remember if there is a group of you – haggle!!

There were 2 routes, 1 red & 1 blue and each went a different way taking in the sights of Lisbon.  We chose the Red route as wanted the tour of the city & the old town.

It was very warm this day and we sat upstairs in the open top area…

Top Tip – wear plenty of sunscreen & a hat if you have one! Take water with you also.

This was a great way to see the City with the headphones on in your own language explaining where you were as you passed.

The whole trip takes approx 2 hours but you can get off and back on at the designated stops and stay in the different areas.  We had planned to stay on and just do the tour but decided way to get off and have a wander, half of the group stayed on though.

We came across this little stall which sold wine & had chairs to sit with a view over the River Tejo, it was a lovely spot and definite must when in Lisbon… ‘Wine with a View’ and it was lovely!

We even got to keep the wine glass as souvenir – only trouble is – not big enough for me – Ha Ha!!

DID YOU KNOW?

The striking Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge spans the River Tejo at its narrowest point and connects Lisbon on the north bank with the commuter districts of Almada on the south. The bridge closely resembles that of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, a likeness that comes from the fact that this bridge was constructed by the same company.

Also in Lisbon is a similar statue to ‘Christ The Reedemer’ in Rio – a lot smaller but worth a visit. This is called Cristo-Rei meaning ‘The Christ Statue’

There are many places to see in Lisbon so definitely worth getting off the ship and have a look around.  Depending where you dock you can walk into town and do your own thing, some of our group did this & went out in the evening. I didn’t as had a very early flight so needed to get to bed quite early.

On our tour we past by a lovely looking building which was a castle – we then found out it was the prison.  Looked too good to be a prison but it was.

Whilst driving through Lisbon there are lots of trees with purple flowers on, these were beautiful and smelt amazing.  These trees are called Jacuranda and are all over the city. They bloom in early May and are so pretty.

Lisbon has so many things to see & do so if you like churches, shopping, walking & culture then I recommend a visit here.

A few more images taken on our trip…
