Wonderful Wonderful Copenhagen.

This weekend I will be in Copenhagen for a 2 night stay before joining a Baltic Cruise  on NCL Getaway. I will be staying at the Admiral Hotel along with my husband and a friend who is meeting us in Copenhagen. The 4* hotel is  situated in the centre of Copenhagen and is surrounded by major tourist attractions, the city’s best shopping and leading theatres. The hotel has 366 rooms and is set in a heritage-listed 1780’s building on the waterfront next to the Amalienborg Royal Palace and opposite the  Opera House. From here it is only 5 minutes’ walk to Nyhavn, where the water buses stop. The Kongens Nytorv Metro Station is about the same distance away so this should make getting around the city quite easy for us.

Although we don’t have a plan we hope to be able to visit as many of the city’s highlights as possible in the time we have. As a few of them will be on our  the doorstep of the hotel these will probably be a good place to start.

The  Amalienborg Royal Palace Is home to the Danish Royal family and consists of four identical classical facades with rococo interiors around an octagonal courtyard. Amalienborg Museum presents the private interiors of the most recent kings and queens and an exhibit to the monarchy today with its many traditions.

Nyhavn is a 17th century waterfront canal and entertainment district stretching from Kongens Nytorv to the harbour front just south of the Royal playhouse. This area is lined with brightly coloured 17th and 18th century townhouses and bars, cafes and restaurants. Hans Christian Anderson lived here for 18 years at Nyhavn 18 that now houses an Anderson themed Souvenir shop. There is also a Hans Christian Anderson fairytale house which exhibits his stories.

The Little Mermaid is probably one of the most well-known landmarks in Copenhagen and has been a major tourist attraction since 1913. The bronze sculpture is displayed on a rock at the Langeline Promenade in Copenhagen and stands 1.2 meters tall and weighs 175kg.

Tivoli Gardens is also a well-known attraction but unfortunately we will miss this as it is only open from mid-April to mid-September, apart from celebrations like Halloween and Christmas. This is a world class amusement park that has rides, over 30 eateries and host live entertainment and where Walt Disney got his inspiration for his world famous theme parks.

For us to  get around and see as much as we can I think the hop on hop off bus is going to look like the best thing to do so we can create our own itinerary and go at our own pace. This will also allow us to have a canal cruise with a flexible ticket, so get the most out of it.

These are just a few options we have and I will be back to tell you all about it on my return. Watch this space!
