Going Solo! Would you?

Cruising is a great way to travel for Families, Couple and Groups of Friends and is becoming more and more popular with Solo Travelers. Cruise lines are now catering more and more for single travelers with single cabins available on-board. NCL were among one of the first to do this on Epic back in 2010 when it introduced 128 studio cabins for singles aboard Epic They also followed this on Breakaway, Getaway and Escape. When NCL Bliss launches this spring she will have virtual windows in the studios showing the view outside.  P&O also have single cabins on all of their ships now apart from Oceana and Cunard  also have them across the fleet. Royal Caribbean has a handful across the fleet and Holland America is the latest solo convert putting 12 single cabins on Koningsdam and there will be 12 single cabins on Nieuw Statendam when she launches at the end of 2018.

Other ships that will also be adding single cabins are Voyages to Antiquity on Aegean Odyssey taking the total to 39 and when Saga Cruise build its first new build Spirit of Discovery, launching in 2019, there will be 109 single cabins all with private balconies.

Recent statistics show that Britain is becoming a nation of singletons as one person households have been on the rise and by 2031 it is estimated that half the population will be living alone. A survey of 1891 people showed 1400 people had taken a holiday on their own and two-thirds of those had chosen to cruise. The reasons given for this were that it is a safe environment, a great way to make friends and always plenty going on.

Not all Solo travellers are single though as 66% said they travelled alone because their partners didn’t want to travel! This allows them the freedom to enjoy doing what they want to do without having someone in tow who doesn’t want to be there!

Lets hope that now with all this availability the cruise lines make this accessibility affordable as the downside to this seems that the single passenger is paying a lot more than if you were travelling with someone else. If a cabin is made for a single person I think they should be paying half of what a double would be, after all they are not eating for two!

What are you thoughts and would travel alone?
