An Alternative to Berlin.

Next month I will be off on a cruise around the Baltic on NCL Getaway. In my last post I mentioned if it was worth booking shore excursions or not, and who were the best value. As we are going to St Petersburg we opted to book an excursion as this comes with Visa included. One of the ports of call is Warnemunde which is where the ship docks for excursions to Berlin. Warnemunde is about 2.5 hours away by road and didn’t really fancy sitting on a coach/train for that long. We had looked into doing a tour with NCL but this was almost £250.00pp for the full day although they do charter a private train for the tour. This aside we have decided that we could go to Berlin for a weekend for just a bit more than that. This then left us wondering what to do while we were there so decided to do some research, good old google to the rescue.

Warnemunde itself  is a small but popular seaside resort town  and is a suburb of the University City of Rostock. As we will be travelling in October I think it will be a bit too cold for the Beach but have decided that Rostock would be a nice place to visit for the day.  A regular train service runs from Warnemunde to Rostock  and only takes around 20 minutes and only costs a  few euros each way. Alternatively a tourist boat makes a trip between Warnemunde and Rostock and takes about 45 minutes and costs approximately 20-30 Euros.

Here we will be able to visit the historic sites like the Rostock City Walls and Museums and may even take a trip to the Zoo! There is also a Pre-Trial Prison which is now a museum that you can visit that is free of charge. If you want to do the audio tour then there is cost for this and takes about 2 hours. This gives you an insight of what it would have been like to have been detained there with the small claustrophobic cells.

As we don’t leave Warnemunde until 9pm we should also have time to see Warnemunde itself either before or after we have  visited Rostcock. Here there is the Lighthouse and Teapot building to visit and you can walk along the street by the canal  called Der Alte Strom or the Old Channel. This is  a promenade of pubs, restaurants and shops, lined with dozens of working fishing boats and tourist boats taking  people out and around the area.

In sure we will find lots to do and I can give you a proper overview when we are back ,but if anyone has any tips I’d love to hear them.
